Regulations Before and After COLREG 1972

Before “COLREG 1972” (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), low-pitched tones were often used for smaller vessels. However, the principle of reserving low tones for large vessels was not strictly enforced. The IMO regulations now reserve very low tones exclusively for the largest ships. For middle-sized and smaller vessels, there are broader frequency options available.

Signal Preferences and Frequency Range

IMO regulations prioritize signals that maintain audibility even at a distance. Vessels between 75 and 200 meters (246 – 656 feet) should use whistles with frequencies ranging between 130 and 350 Hz. These frequencies ensure effective communication and compliance with maritime safety standards.

Electronic Bell and Gong BG 300

The Electronic Bell and Gong system BG 300 is designed for vessels at anchor, particularly in restricted visibility. It complies with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (1972), Rule 33. According to these regulations, vessels 12 meters or longer must have a bell, while vessels over 100 meters must also be equipped with a gong. The gong must produce a tone distinct from the bell, ensuring no confusion between the two sounds. The system delivers a sound pressure level of at least 110 dB at 1 meter, meeting these regulatory requirements.

General Information

The Bell and Gong sound emitters in the BG 300 system are electrodynamic, compact, and aesthetically designed. Their small size provides advantages over other bulky loudspeaker designs, enhancing both functionality and appearance. Modern electronics power the system, with the BG 300 amplifier controlling the sound emitters. The system provides the signal characters required by regulations for “ship aground” and “ship at anchor” situations.

To operate the system, crew members can activate the bell and gong through pushbuttons on the bridge, which connect directly to the BG 300 power amplifier. The recorded and synthesized sounds of real bell and gong instruments ensure the signals have an authentic, distinct tone.

Power Amplifier BG 300

The BG 300 power amplifier incorporates advanced technology, delivering authentic bell and gong sounds. It requires only 24V DC (7A) for operation, with a maximum output power of 2 x 120W. The amplifier is designed for indoor installation and must be protected from water, ensuring long-lasting performance in harsh marine environments.

This efficient, compact system ensures compliance with maritime safety regulations while offering reliable and clear sound signaling for vessels in restricted visibility.

A Strong Signal Without Noise

Many who navigate under the IMO Regulations (COLREG 1972) understand the importance of sound pressure levels for efficient signaling. However, the rules also state that “the sound pressure level of the vessel’s own signal at the listening posts shall not exceed 110 dBA and, as far as practicable, should not exceed 100 dBA.” This creates a challenge: how can a vessel emit a strong signal without producing excessive noise onboard?

Solving the Paradox

The common solution to this dilemma is placing the whistle high above deck. But what if even the highest point isn’t high enough? The answer lies in a whistle with unsymmetrical sound distribution. This innovative design offers several benefits:

  • Focused Sound Radiation: The total sound is directed towards the horizontal plane, reducing downward (and upward) noise by up to 10 dBA.
  • Even Sound Distribution: The sound spreads appropriately in all horizontal directions, ensuring compliance with the headline sound pressure levels prescribed by IMO.
  • Optimized Sound Spectrum: This specially designed sound spectrum ensures high electro-acoustic efficiency and rich “tone color,” making the signal more perceptible in noisy environments.
  • Durable Design: The horn uses twin-unit electrodynamic drivers protected by non-metallic, glass-fiber reinforced polyester, ensuring durability and long-term performance.

These advancements come together in the TYFON ETD 100/350, a new horn with a vertically extended front that tackles the issue of excessive onboard noise.

Additionally, when a “combined system” of two whistles, as described by the IMO, is employed, an even more effective and significant tone spectrum is produced. An air-driven TYFON for 260 or 440 Hz adds further reliability and top-notch performance.

DU350
The DU350 comes in two versions: one for tank presentation and another for draught data. The tank version displays level (in units or percentage), with up to four alarm limits (L/LL/H/HH), and can optionally show volume. The draught version calculates and displays readings (forward, aft, mid-port, and mid-starboard) and provides trim and heel values. Both versions support manual density adjustment for more precise measurements.

H8 Utility Software
The H8 utility software, distributed free with LEVELMASTER® H8 hardware, serves as a valuable service and maintenance tool. It can also be used for basic tank and draught presentation on a local laptop. Users simply input pipe offset and density values for backup level monitoring.

Web Browser Interface
The web interface, built using WPF and Silverlight .NET technologies, offers a secure, flexible way to remotely view tank level and draught status. Silverlight supports browser-based clients, providing essential features with minimal software requirements.

LEVELMASTER® WIM – Water Ingress Monitoring

SOLAS XII/12 Compliance for Bulk Carriers
For over 30 years, Kockum Sonics has delivered reliable marine level technology through its LEVELMASTER® system. In response to SOLAS XII/12 regulations, we introduced the LEVELMASTER WIM (Water Ingress Monitoring) solution. Based on the well-established LEVELMASTER® CALM system, WIM uses accurate electro-pneumatic measurement, eliminating the need for electrical components in the holds. This design reduces both installation and operational costs significantly. Furthermore, the system is type-approved by leading classification societies such as DNV, LRS, ABS, and BV.

Key Features and Benefits

Each hold, tank, or compartment connects to a central LEVELMASTER® CALM cabinet using a single sensing pipe. The cabinet houses all electrical components and hydrostatic sensors, eliminating the need for costly zener barriers or cable junction boxes. Sensing lines are made of durable polyamide tubing or optional stainless steel, making them cost-effective and easy to install.

The system automatically self-calibrates every 24 hours to ensure consistent accuracy. In case of solid ingress into the tube, an automatic air purge function activates. Importantly, there are no electrical sensors in the cargo holds, only a simple sensing tube. Additionally, the system can convert any sounding pipe into a sensing tube with a special valve unit adapter, while air consumption remains minimal.

Continuous Level Measurement and Alarms

The LEVELMASTER WIM provides real-time level information, helping the Master determine whether an alarm is an actual scenario or a false alarm. Unlike limit switch systems, which might only indicate 500mm of water in the hold, WIM can show whether the water level has reached a critical depth, such as 1900mm.

The DU350 WIM alarm panel complies with IMO specifications and can be either console or bulkhead mounted. We also offer serial outputs to interface with ship stability and cargo planning software like LOADMASTER®.

Vessels over 200 meters (656 feet) should use whistles with frequencies of 130 Hz or lower. These frequencies ensure effective communication and compliance with maritime safety standards.

Installation Instructions for MKT 150/110

Mounting the MKT 150/110

Secure the MKT 150/110 whistle with four M12 bolts to an outrigger or similar construction. Ensure the structure is stable to prevent any operational issues.

Cleaning the Supply Pipe
Before connecting the supply pipe to the whistle, blow the pipe thoroughly clean. This step is crucial to avoid any functional troubles caused by debris or contaminants in the pipe.

Installing a Primary Filter
If the pipeline above deck exceeds 100 meters (328 feet), install a primary FILTER TP 15/2 at the base of the mast. This filter protects the whistle from water condensate and rust particles, ensuring reliable operation.

Maintaining the Filter
Regular maintenance is essential for ensuring optimal performance. To begin with, it is recommended to drain the filter approximately once a month. By doing so, you can effectively prevent blockages while also maintaining the integrity of the signaling system.
